"We are extremely excited and pleased with the recognition being given to Dr. JŠuregui by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. His outstanding record of success in teaching, research, and service complements his work as a mentor and role model for our students," said Steven P. Castillo, College of Engineering dean.

He will be honored at the Advancing Hispanic Excellence in Technology, Engineering, Math and Science (AHETEMS) conference this November in Phoenix. JŠuregui was nominated by peers and colleagues for this honor. His nomination was reviewed by a selection committee comprised of professionals, educators and community leaders.

"Dr. JŠuregui walks the talk of what we stand for at the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers," said Diana Gomez, president of the board of directors of SHPE. "He inspires students toward careers in his own chosen field of engineering, conveys more information and inspiration to young Hispanic professionals about the resources available to them through SHPE and kindred groups, and works to strengthen the engineering workforce in the United States now and in years to come."

JŠuregui is a native of the town of Hurley, N.M., and received a bachelor and master of science degree in civil engineering from NMSU and a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at Austin.

JŠuregui teaches undergraduate and graduate courses at NMSU in mechanics of materials, structural analysis, steel design and behavior, experimental methods, and bridge engineering. His nationally recognized and well-funded research has made significant contributions to the structural engineering field in the areas of bridge design, load rating, advanced analysis and field testing. JŠuregui received an NMSU University Research Council Award for Exceptional Achievements in Creative Scholarly Activity in 2003. He was twice named NMSU Civil Engineering Professor of the Year (2003-2004, 2004-2005) and he received the NMSU College of Engineering Bromilow Teaching Excellence Award in 2006.

"I am honored to accept the AHETEMS Educator of the Year Award in Higher Education because of the recognition by my peers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) academic community as well as the resources it provides to continue working with Hispanic students in the STEM disciplines. I am particularly grateful for the support I received from the NMSU administrators, faculty, and students that made this award possible." said JŠuregui.
