Math professor receives "Best Paper" award at conference

Pat Baggett, a mathematics professor at New Mexico State University, received the "Best Paper" award at the 2003 Science, Engineering & Technology Education Conference Jan. 3.

's paper, "An Intergrated Math and Science Course for Present and Future Teachers," discussed a sequence of mathematics courses which contain a large science component infused with technology for practicing and future teachers.

Along with the award, Baggett received support to attend a national conference on science and mathematics education.

Twenty-five faculty and staff members from the Colleges of Engineering, Arts and Science and Agriculture presented papers on "Elevating Recognition for Education Research in Science, Engineering, Technology and Mathematics."

Papers were presented on innovative curriculum and teaching methodologies, using technology in science and engineering education, assessment, student retention, and professional development at NMSU.

The conference was developed by the New Mexico Space Grant Consortium and sponsored by the College of Engineering. Conference papers are available on-line at http://spacegrant.nmsu.edu/conference/2003/papers.htm.

The sixth annual conference will be on Jan. 7, 2004, at the Corbett Center Senate Chambers.
