NMSU nursing professor selected to help write national exam

New Mexico State University Associate Nursing Professor Karen Hempstead has been selected as an item writer for the National Council of State Boards of Nursing Licensure Examination (NCLEX), an examination graduate nurses must pass prior to receiving their nursing license.

As one of 10 nurses selected from across the nation, Hempstead will travel to Princeton, N.J., to construct exam questions for the NCLEX.

This is Hempstead's sixth consecutive year to be chosen as an item writer.

NCLEX item writers develop questions according to test plan specifications that are appropriate for entry-level nurses, validate answers in standard texts and work to ensure the clarity of the exam's content.

Hempstead, whose area of clinical expertise is cardiovascular nursing, has been an NMSU faculty member for 15 years.
