University Art Gallery to host a special film viewing

The New Mexico State University Art Gallery will hold a special screening of the Satyajit Ray film "Two Daughters" from 12 to 1 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 12 in Williams Hall on the campus of NMSU.

The presentation is part of the art gallery's Art A la Carte series, which features a variety of visual and performances arts on selected Fridays throughout the year.

The film tells two stories, "The Postmaster" and "Samapti," that deal with the emancipation of women. Ray is an Indian film maker known best for films that have a humanistic approach to his subjects. In 1992 he received an honorary Academy Award in recognition of what the academy called "his rare mastery of the art of motion pictures and for his profound humanitarian outlook, which has had an incredible influence on film makers throughout the world."

The presentations are free and open to the public and free popcorn and punch will be served. For more information call Jackie Mitchell, museum educator for the University Art Gallery, at (505) 646-4010.
