NMSU hosts Southwestern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair

New Mexico State University is sponsoring the 2009 Southwestern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair Saturday, March 7, at Corbett Center Student Union.

More than 100 students in grades 6-12 will compete in the many categories that include animal sciences, biochemistry, engineering, mathematical sciences, and physics, among others. These students represent 17 middle and high schools from Alamogordo, Chaparral, Cliff, Deming, Las Cruces, Silver City, Socorro, and Vado.

NMSU Interim President Waded Cruzado welcomes all individuals attending the Science and Engineering Fair.

"We look forward to meeting our future engineers, scientists, and leaders," Cruzado said. "These students have worked hard on their projects for many months. We wish to thank the many organizations that will be presenting awards to the winners of this year's fair."

Students who win first in each category and some students who win second place will be eligible to compete in the State Science and Engineering Fair in Socorro in April. Students in grades 9-12 will compete for a chance to go to the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair in Reno, Nev., in May.

"The Science and Engineering Fair is a fantastic opportunity to recruit students interested in the sciences, energy, and engineering to NMSU," said Dr. Avis James, director of the science and engineering fair. "It gives us an opportunity to showcase our campus and programs to young students, their parents and their teachers. We are delighted that distinguished faculty members from the colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering are judging the various exhibits."

Registration will take place from 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 6, and from 7-8:15 a.m. Saturday, March 7, at the Corbett Center Ballrooms. The Safety Review Team will be conducting safety checks during this time.

The Fair will be open to the public from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the Corbett Center Ballrooms. The award ceremony, which is open to the public, begins at 6 p.m.
