Chile Camp deadline approaching

Hundreds of incoming New Mexico State University freshmen will get a spicy taste of college life as they embark on the university's fourth annual Chile Camp, an orientation program specifically designed to make the transition from high school to college easier for future Aggies.

Chile Camp is sponsored by the Associated Students of NMSU, the university's student government, and will be held July 21-24. The camp is run by 30 student counselors and about 400 campers are expected to attend this year, according to NMSU junior Rachel Bustamante, Chile Camp director.

The camp will include the usual freshmen orientation programs such as course registration and the opportunity to take College-Level Examination Programs and Math Placement Exams. But what makes Chile Camp lively are its social activities, like group discussions and dance parties for campers. Participants are divided into small groups and are led through the program by counselors who have been through orientation themselves, and can help answer questions and address the concerns of incoming freshmen.

The four-day event costs $65 and includes meals, housing and all activities. The deadline for Chile Camp registration is June 18. For more information or applications, call Rachel Bustamante at (505) 646-4415 or e-mail rabustam@nmsu.edu.
