Fant appointed interim dean of College of Arts and Sciences

Greg Fant, associate dean of development for New Mexico State University's College of Arts and Sciences, has been appointed interim dean of the college. His promotion is effective Aug. 1.

Greg Fant will begin his role as interim dean of New Mexico State University's College of Arts and Sciences on Aug. 1.

Fant has served the university in a number of roles including director of the Pride of New Mexico marching band, music professor, music department head, and was interim-dean of the College of Arts and Sciences once before in 2007.

Fant, a conductor and saxophonist, was NMSU's music department head from 1999 to 2007 during which he saw a need for more collaboration among the campus arts programs. Working alongside other department heads and community members, he assisted in the formation of a planning committee for the Center for the Arts project.

Fant will succeed the current dean Pamela Jansma who will be leaving NMSU at the end of July to serve as the dean of the College of Science at the University of Texas at Arlington.

"This past year has given me the opportunity to know and work with Pam Jansma. She has done a fine job as Dean of the College. Although I am sorry to see her leave, I understand her reasons and wish her the very best at UT-Arlington," Fant said.

"The College of Arts and Sciences has a tremendous faculty and staff, who day in and day out provide an exceptional college experience for our students while expanding our realm of knowledge and serving the citizens of New Mexico. It is indeed an honor to be able to serve as interim Dean and work with this great group of people," he said.

Fant was the recent recipient of the Papen Family Award given by the Doņa Ana Arts Council (DAAC) for his service, commitment and leadership in the arts community.
