NMSU nursing professor selected to help write national exam

New Mexico State University assistant nursing professor Karen Hempstead has been selected as an item writer for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), an examination nurses must pass before they receive their nursing license.

As one of only 10 nurses selected from across the nation, Hempstead will travel to Princeton, N.J., in July to help write exam questions for the NCLEX.

This is Hempstead's fourth consecutive year to be chosen as an item writer.

NCLEX item writers develop questions according to test plan specifications, validate answers in standard texts appropriate for entry-level nurses and check with organizers to ensure the clarity of the exam's content.

Hempstead, whose area of clinical expertise is cardiovascular nursing, has been an NMSU faculty member for 14 years.
