Public invited to schematic design presentation of new NMSU bookstore

The public will get a chance to view the first schematic designs and gather more information on a new $14 million bookstore proposed for New Mexico State University.

The Facilities Planning and Construction Department will have a public meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6, in the second floor of NMSU's Corbett Center to discuss the schematic design of the proposed Barnes & Noble University Bookstore.

The presentation will be given by Antunovich Associates Architects. The architectural company will present their schematic design, which is a conceptual design developed at the beginning of the project to demonstrate a design approach and strategy. These designs are presented with drawings of floor plans, elevations, building sections and site plans.

"The presentation of the schematic design is intended to elicit public input in the form of comments, suggestions and questions about the proposed project to help guide further design efforts," said Orasa T. Vaught, project manager for NMSU's Facilities Planning and Construction Department.

The proposed bookstore would be built on the corner of University Avenue and Jordan Street. The 45,000 square-foot building will house NMSU's academic bookstore, provide 2,500 square feet for NMSU's Auxiliary Services offices and open about 7,500 square feet of retail space. The bookstore area will take up approximately 35,000 square feet, which is 11,881 square feet more than the current bookstore at Corbett Center.

Money for construction of the building will be paid for by revenue bonds. Revenue bonds are a type of municipal bond secured by revenue or income generated by the bond issuer. No taxpayer money is used to pay off the revenue bonds.
