Employment opportunities will be available at Borderlands Public Career Showcase

Focusing on helping college students, alumni and qualified members of the community find full-time employment, internships and cooperative education assignments with federal, state and municipal government agencies, New Mexico State University's Career Services will hold the Borderlands Public Service Career Showcase from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, on the first floor of Corbett Center Student Union.

"Career opportunities in the public service sector, especially with the federal government, continue to be a bright spot in an otherwise tight job market," said Steve Salway, director of NMSU Career Services.

The showcase is free, and candidates from throughout the region are invited to the event. Participants should prepare several copies of their resumes, dress professionally and expect to interact and discuss employment opportunities with government and nonprofit agencies.

Candidates from all academic disciplines are encouraged to attend the showcase as the government sectors will be looking to hire for a broad range of career fields. Resumes should be detailed as possible and list all transferable skills because government employers often require more specifics on candidates' knowledge base, skill, achievements and abilities.

About 40 employers are expected to participate at the showcase, such as the Internal Revenue Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of State, the U.S. Peace Corps and several law enforcement employers.

"The recent economic downturn is affecting everyone," Salway said. "Government sectors' employment has been strong though, and many agencies offer good career ladders in which to progress, along with substantial employee benefits packages."
