Valencia Scholarship applications available for Farmington High School seniors

A new scholarship is now available for a Farmington High School graduate who will be attending New Mexico State University in 2010-2011. This year the first Anne-Marie Valencia Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to a 2010 Farmington High School graduate. This scholarship will be given to a FHS student entering college as a freshman and who will be pursuing a career at the NMSU School of Nursing.

The scholarship fund has been established to help a graduating senior entering college with educational expenses related to being a student in the pre-nursing program. To be eligible for this award, a student must have a 2.5 GPA and be active in student activities and/or have part-time employment. Volunteer service to others as well as financial need will also be a consideration for the awarding of this honor.

This endowment was created to honor the memory of Anne-Marie Valencia who lost her life in an automobile accident in December 2004. After graduating from FHS, she was a student at NMSU who participated in campus and community activities and was also a member of Phi Eta Sigma honor society.

"She is greatly missed by those who knew and love her," said Anne-Marie's parents Eugene and Katy Valencia, "This scholarship represents Anne-Marie's own generosity to help those who may need extra encouragement to explore educational opportunities that may not be available without this financial assistance."

Information and applications for this program are available at the Farmington High School counselor's office. There will also be posters on campus with this information for all interested students regarding this opportunity.

The deadline for applications is March 1, 2010. For more information contact Connie Loyd at (575) 646-5985 or clouloyd@ad.nmsu.edu.
