Dance institute presents 'Look Who's Dancing!' 2010

The Pan American Dance Institute at New Mexico State University and the Big Band Dance Club will present the Las Cruces version of "Dancing with the Stars," featuring community leaders and local personalities in the 2010 "Look Who's Dancing!" competition at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 7, at the NMSU Pan American Center.

More than 3,000 fans are expected to attend. This year's competitors will include business owner and First Lady of Las Cruces Susana Chaparro, Las Cruces City Councilor Dolores Connor, Bright Star Dental owner Dr. Brian Gilbert, NMSU Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management director Janet Green, Guzman Sport Karate and Kickboxing owner Eli Guzman, Dona Ana Community College President Margie Huerta, Onate High School football coach Kelly McKee and Mike McKay of "Your Morning Show with Mike and KC" on 101 Gold.

The students of the NMSU DanceSport Company will choreograph the dances, instruct, and perform with the local celebrities. Each couple will perform two dances. All couples will dance the Waltz, and the second dance will include Bolero, Cha Cha, Mambo, Paso Doble, Quickstep, Rumba, Samba and Tango.

A new feature has been added to this year's event. Immediately following the competition, the audience will be invited to dance to live music for two hours at no additional cost. Bob Burns and the Mike Caranda Orchestra, featuring singer Judy Day, will provide the music. This 12-piece, big-band-style orchestra also includes Ruben Smith on the saxophone. Smith was the third-place winner in the 2009 "Look Who's Dancing!"

This year's hosts, the Big Band Dance Club, DanceSport Society, and the NMSU Dance Program, which strive to promote social dancing in the community as a healthful and enjoyable activity for all ages and all skill levels, are hoping to surpass last year's contribution of more than $12,000 to the NMSU DanceSport Company. The contribution from "Look Who's Dancing!" helps to fund the team's competition expenses. Part of the 2009 proceeds allowed the team to compete at Stanford University where they placed very well. The team frequently performs in and around Las Cruces throughout the year.

Tickets are $12 for general admission (rows nine and up), and $20 for reserved seats (rows one through eight). Reserved and general admission tickets are available at the NMSU Ticket Office and by calling (575) 646-1420. General admission tickets also may be purchased from Enchanted Gardens and White's Music Box. Tickets will also be available at the door on the day of the event.
