NMSU professor will give speech on civic education issues

New Mexico State University faculty member Charles Townley will give a speech addressing civic education in the United States and China at 7 p.m. March 10 in Hardman Hall Room 212.

A College of Education professor of educational management and development, Townley was the co-chair of an international civic education conference held in Beijing, China, in January. His speech will be about the conference and the comparative issues examined during the event.

The conference focused on the question of how schools can educate youth to become productive citizens and compared how American and Chinese societies are addressing civic education in a time of rapid change. Participants explored what the two countries can learn from each other and different concepts of the role and function of individuals and societies.

During his speech, Townley also will discuss the specific problems facing American and Chinese students in civic education.
