NMSU celebrates Fiestas Latinas

ASNMSU, along with several Hispanic student organizations, will host Fiestas Latinas at New Mexico State University April 14-25.

"Fiestas Latinas has become such a great part of my social life and has been a very positive experience," NMSU Hispanic Council President Julia Garcia said.

Fiestas Latinas kicks off with Hispanic Art Night at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the Corbett Center Student Union Ballrooms. Noted poet and screenwriter of "Blood In, Blood Out," Jimmy Santiago Baca will speak and read from his new novel set in southern New Mexico, "A Glass of Water."

Baca is the winner of the Pushcart Prize, the American Book Award and the International Award for his memoir "A Place to Stand." Following Baca's readings, NMSU student writers will read selections from their creative work. Student art will also be displayed at the Students for Equality Education and Diversity (S.E.E.D.)-sponsored event.

Matachines, a centuries-old Indo-Hispanic dance that has been popular in Latin America and other parts of the world, will take place at 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, on the Corbett Center East Outdoor Stage. The event is hosted by Latinos for Exito.

"Bailando con las Pinguinas" (Dancing with the Penguins), hosted by Kappa Delta Chi, will take place Friday, April 16. The event will begin with DanceSport members teaching attendees how to dance salsa, cha-cha and swing from 4-7 p.m. on the Corbett Center East Outdoor Stage. A social dance will follow from 9-11:30 p.m. in the Aggie Underground on the first floor of Corbett Center.

The College Assistant Migrant Program (C.A.M.P.) will host the Fiestas Latinas Soccer Tournament from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at NMSU's Intramural Fields.

Comedy Night will feature Jorge Jimenez and guests at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, at the Corbett Center Auditorium. The event is for mature audiences only and is sponsored by the Mexican American Scientists and Engineers and the Association of Latino professionals in Finance and Accounting.

Movie Night will feature "Selena," and will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Corbett Center Auditorium. The event is hosted by the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers.

The celebrations will close out with the Fiestas Latinas Softball Tournament from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, April 25, at the NMSU Intramural Fields. The event is hosted by Omega Delta Phi. The softball tournament has been held for about 16 years.

Participation on teams for the sports events, and in the student literary readings and art exhibition is limited to full-time NMSU students only. There will be a mandatory team meeting during the week before the softball and soccer tournaments. All events are free and open to the NMSU community.
