Educators' Job Fair will provide employment opportunities

To provide graduating education students and experienced professionals with an opportunity to interview with numerous school districts throughout the region, New Mexico State University's Career Services will hold the 2010 Educators' Job Fair from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, April 19 and 20, in Corbett Center Student Union.

This year's job market for teaching candidates is very challenging due to budget concerns at the state and school district levels. However, this fair remains a dynamic recruiting forum for districts throughout the Southwest. It is unique in that it's set up for participants to have structured interviews with prospective school district employers.

More than 40 school districts from twelve different states are expected to attend the fair. Anyone who qualifies for teacher credentials and is seeking a K-12 teaching position or a support position for the 2010-2011 school year is encouraged to participate. This free event is a public service and is not intended only for NMSU education students but is also open to all teachers and education professionals interested in a job change.

During last year's event, about 400 participants registered and participated in the job fair, and Steve Salway, director of NMSU Career Services, said the program is capable of accommodating twice that amount this year.

While participants are encouraged to electronically preregister beforehand, on-site registration is available at the job fair. Information on electronic on-line registration is available by calling (575) 646-2849 or by e-mail at proemp@nmsu.edu.

Participants should also research and prepare as much as possible before the job fair. They should learn as much as they can about the school districts they are interested in, as well as looking up factors such as the cost of living in that area. Advance job search homework could yield a number of exciting employment possibilities.

On the Sunday before the Educators' Job Fair, April 18, an open outreach forum will be held to help anybody prepare for the fair. The session will be from 3-5 p.m. in the Dona Ana Room of Corbett Center.
