The competition is a quiz bowl of insect facts that cover all aspects of entomology, including history, morphology, physiology, taxonomy and behavior. The first-place win means the team will go on to compete at the national meeting of the ESA in December.

The team is composed of undergraduate student Joni Blount, of Glenwood, N.M., graduate student Graeme Davis, of Albuquerque, N.M., graduate student Sam Lowry, of Las Cruces, N.M., graduate student Ik Ju Park, from South Korea, and undergraduate student Melise Schmidt, of Amsterdam, N.Y.

Students on the team also presented during research competitions. Schmidt placed second in the undergraduate poster competition, Davis placed second in the master's oral competition, and Lowry placed second in the master's poster competition.

The NMSU team competed against teams from Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, West Texas A&M University and the University of Texas at Tyler.

"Our students, who have traditionally been predominantly undergraduates, hold their own against the top universities in the country, many of which are often composed entirely of doctoral students. We have placed in the top two in regional competitions the majority of the time over the last eight or ten years," said Scott Bundy, NMSU Linnaean team coach.
