Tucumcari Extension clinic offers riders techniques to handle horses

TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Riders wanting to learn from the best about how to handle their horses - and try their hand at a little friendly competition - are invited to attend the Ranch Horse Clinic and Ranch Cutting Competition June 5-6 in Tucumcari.

The two-day event is being organized by New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service in Quay County.

"At the horse clinic, we want to give riders overall knowledge and education about working with their horses in different scenarios - such as competitive events and for work purposes - in order for them to learn better skills," said Tom Dominguez, Extension agricultural agent for Quay County.

Clinicians Jay Henson and Terry Riddle will be on hand to give one-on-one instruction to riders on cutting, roping, reining and fence work.

After sharpening their horsemanship skills, the riders are invited to stay and put their skills to the test in the cutting competition.

The ranch cutting competition is geared toward beginners, Dominguez said. To be eligible to compete, the horse cannot have won more than $1,500 in any cutting horse competition. In the cowboy class, neither the horse nor the rider can have won any money in a cutting horse competition. Buckles and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the cutting competition.

The cost to attend the ranch horse clinic June 5 is $175, and the cost to attend the ranch cutting competition June 6 is $150. A $100 deposit to attend one or both of the events is due May 21.

Both events will be held at the Quay County Fairgrounds at 1000 Camino del Coronado in Tucumcari.
