Summer dance program offered by NMSU

New Mexico State University's Summer Dance Institute is set for Mondays through Fridays from June 5-16.

The two-week program for students ages 7 to 18 features some of the best teachers in Las Cruces, said Helen Myers, NMSU dance program coordinator. Myers will direct the institute and teach modern dance. The institute's faculty also includes Jose Tena, director of Ballet Folklorico de laTierra del Encanto, teaching ballet folklorico; Ruben Ornelas, NMSU dance instructor, teaching ballet; Mei Ling Po McKay of Court Youth Center, teaching modern dance; and Laurie MacFarlane of Branigan Cultural Center's "Another Planet" project, teaching modern dance. Paul Murphy of the University of Texas at El Paso is the institute's accompanist.

Students will take daily classes in ballet, modern dance and ballet folklorico. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon in studios 228 and 229 of the NMSU Activity Center.

Students will share a closing day performance with their parents and families on June 16. The cost is $100 per student. More information can be obtained by calling (505) 646-2215. Financial aid is available for low-income and minority applicants.
