New Mexico 4-H members to gather for state conference

The 87th Annual State 4-H Conference will be held July 12-16 at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

During the week-long event, more than 250 4-H members from across the state will gather for contests, workshops, evening sessions and awards ceremonies. This year's theme is "4-Wheel Drive with 4-H."

Participants will compete in a variety of contests, such as livestock judging, crop judging and home economics presentations. The winners of the contests will receive their awards during awards sessions on Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon.

On Thursday evening, a dinner and concert will be held at Dickerson's Event Center. A donation to the Las Cruces de Noche Lions Club will be presented Tuesday night. Each county in New Mexico was challenged to raise money through community service for the organization. Last year, more than $10,000 was raised for the University of New Mexico Cancer Center.

The keynote speaker is entrepreneur and athlete Keith Davis, who will present a program Monday night about youth reaching their full potential both in and out of the classroom. Davis won two Rose Bowl championship rings while playing football for the University of Southern California. He also played for the New York Giants in the NFL.

The NMSU 4-H program is dedicated to enabling youth to become productive, well-informed, self-reliant and responsible adults.
