NMSU offers course for established, aspiring pecan growers

Pecan growers and those interesting in becoming pecan growers are encouraged to register for the Western Pecan Production Short Course, hosted by New Mexico State University Sept. 8-10 at the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces. The course is designed for anyone seeking to grow pecans in New Mexico, West Texas, Arizona or California.

"This is really a comprehensive course for growers and potential growers throughout the region," said Richard Heerema, NMSU's Extension pecan specialist. "We'll cover topics that can help established growers increase their yields and quality. We can also give new growers information to help them decide where to plant and varieties to use."

During the two-and-a-half-day course, experts from NMSU and Texas A&M University will present lectures specifically for growing in the western region of the U.S. Topics will include orchard site selection, planting, variety selection, grafting and budding, pruning and training, irrigation, fertilizers, pest and disease management, orchard floor management and marketing and economics.

New Mexico has an estimated 40,000 acres of pecans, with operations ranging in size from only a few acres to several thousand. Pecans are also considered to be a high-profit crop, generating higher revenues per acre than other crops grown in the region.
