NMSU writers featured in Pushcart Prize anthology

Five New Mexico State University English department creative writers are recognized in The Pushcart Prize 2000 anthology, the 24th annual collection of the best work published the previous year by hundreds of literary journals and small presses.

The annual anthology includes professor Robert Boswell's short story "Miss Famous," which originally was published in The Colorado Review, and assistant professor Tony Hoagland's poem "The Dog Years," which appeared in Many Mountains Moving.

The Pushcart book contains 62 stories, poems, essays and memoirs. It is due out in paperback in June by W.W. Norton & Co.

Special mention is given to other important literary works published during 1999. On the list are professor Kevin McIlvoy's story "The People Who Own Pianos," published in The Southern Review, and associate professor Antonya Nelson's story "Incognito," published in American Short Fiction. English graduate student Becky Hagenston received special mention for her story "Close Enough," published in Witness.

NMSU's national literary magazine Puerto Del Sol was recognized for publishing the story "Slumming" by Nicholas Montemarano.

The Pushcart Prize is the most honored literary series in America. It has been chosen for many Book-of-the-Month Club and Quality Paperback Book Club selections, named a notable book of the year by the New York Times, and hailed by Publishers Weekly as "among the most influential in the development of the American book business over the past 125 years."

Pushcart Prize editor Bill Henderson said the book is proof "that small presses and little magazines are alive and thriving in conglomerate-dominated, consumer-ridden, computer-addicted America."

Copies of Pushcart Prize 2000 can be ordered through the NMSU Bookstore, (505) 646-1427, and will be available this summer at bookstores nationwide.
