Colloquium Series topic looks at designing future generations

Should people use genetic technologies to select the best embryos for implantation?

New Mexico State University philosophy professor Mark Walker will present a lecture titled "Designer Babies," which will look at the ethics of pre-implantation, genetic diagnosis. The lecture will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in NMSU's Science Hall, Room 107.

"Embryos are now tested to prevent things like genetic disease," Walker said. "What we'll look at in this discussion is if this type of testing should be done for "positive" traits like intelligence and happiness."

"Designer Babies" will be the first of four presentations slated for NMSU's fall 2010 College of Arts and Sciences Colloquium Series.

The colloquium is free and open to the campus and community. For more information call 575-646-4616.
