NMSU Rodeo team competes at first rodeo of the season

The New Mexico State University men's and women's rodeo teams each placed second overall during the season opener, the Mesalands Community College National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association rodeo Sept. 17-18 in Tucumcari, N.M.

Trenten Montero, of Winnemucca, Nev., placed second overall in the bareback riding event, while teammate Cooper DeWitt, of Rio Rico, Ariz., won first in saddle bronc riding.

Johnny Salvo, of Horse Springs, N.M., won first in tie-down roping. Las Cruces, N.M., native Bo Simpson won second.

The team of Rodee Walraven, header, of Datil, N.M., and Salvo, heeler, placed third in the team roping.

For the women's team, Olivia Train, of Myrtle Point, Ore., won first in breakaway roping. Shiann Irwin, of Bosque Farms, N.M., placed second in the barrel racing event.

The team will next compete at the Cochise College NIRA rodeo Sept. 24-25 in Douglas, Ariz.
