LASSO conference to focus on language, culture during Hispanic Heritage Month at NMSU

The Linguistic Association of the Southwest (LASSO) will focus on the linguistic traditions and innovations of the Southwestern United States during its conference from Oct. 7-9 in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month at New Mexico State University.

Daniel Villa, LASSO conference organizer, said NMSU is a perfect location to host the conference this year.

"We are the homeland. This is where Spanish speakers entered into this part of the United States, long before the speakers of English," Villa said. "The Camino Real crosses through what is now the NMSU campus at Espina Street. NMSU is a perfect location to celebrate our linguistic influence."

A special focus of the conference will be to update students and teachers on recent innovations in the field of teaching Spanish for heritage speakers and on Spanish as spoken west of the Mississippi River.

Two of the sessions are open to the public. To register for the conference, contact Villa at dvilla@nmsu.edu or the NMSU Department of Languages and Linguistics at 575-646-3408.
