NMSU art department professor presents contemporary art lecture series

A New Mexico State University Department of Art professor will present a lecture series, Encountering Contemporary Art, at 10 a.m. Oct. 6, 11 and 13 at the Good Samaritan Senior Center in Las Cruces.

NMSU Department of Art professor Stephanie Taylor will present a series of lectures with the goal of changing the public's perceptions of contemporary art.

"It's all about encouraging people to reconsider their reactions to contemporary art," Taylor said. "Contemporary art is often hard to understand, because some of it is designed to push people's buttons and make them uncomfortable. We are trying to address that resistance and see how people can learn to like the art and appreciate it."

The lecture sessions, "Installation Art and Intermedia: Blurring the Boundaries of Contemporary Art"; "Everything Old is New Again: Recycled Ideas and Materials in Contemporary Art"; and "Globalism: Expanding the Boundaries of Contemporary Art," will focus on different strategies and approaches to contemporary art.

The Academy for Learning in Retirement features presentations and lectures on a variety of topics throughout the year.

"The Academy for Learning in Retirement is a real jewel of Las Cruces community life," Taylor said. "It's an easy, relaxing way to learn something you may not know anything about."

The sessions are open to the public. For more information, visit http://www.dacc.nmsu.edu/comed/ALR or call 575-527-7527.
