Dia de los Muertos to be Celebrated on Historic Mesilla Plaza

Las Cruces -- Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, will be celebrated on the historic plaza in Mesilla, N.M., on Sunday, Nov. 1. The third annual event is a celebration and remembrance of friends and relatives who have died.

"Dia de los Muertos continues a long-held Hispanic tradition," said Mike Cook of the Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) project. "In conjunction with the day, the Town of Mesilla is offering mask-making and altar-building workshops throughout October."

The event begins at 10 a.m. with assembling and displaying altar memorials. A car show and parade will begin at 1 p.m., followed by a costume contest at 4 p.m. A piņata breaking will be at 4:30 p.m., and a luminaria procession to the local cemetery will begin at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by Johnnie Flores throughout the day.

There will be no admission for Dia de los Muertos.
