NMSU Equestrian Team Places First in Region

LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico State University's Equestrian Team placed first in the region at a show held Feb. 27-28 in Cheyenne, Wyo.

Accumulating points in 10 shows throughout the season, the NMSU Western riding team placed first, finishing 48 points ahead of Colorado State University. The team will advance to the national competition May 1-3 in Port Jarvis, N.Y. The hunt seat, or English, team placed second in the region.

Michelle Boudrie, Jeb Stuart and Jessica Ackerman won individual high-point awards at the show.

This year, a regional sportsmanship award was established in memory of Patrick Pirtle, who was a member of NMSU's Equestrian Team at the time of his death in January. Miguel Maes of NMSU was selected to receive the award from more than 300 competitors. Coaches from the nine schools in the region voted unanimously to give the award to Maes.

In individual competition, 12 NMSU riders qualified for the zone competition, which will be held at Texas A&M on March 28. English riders who qualified are Jessica Ackerman, Kayce Brown, Cathy Cumberworth, Pam Bruemmer and Jessica Sorenson. Western riders who qualified are Cathy Cumberworth, Julie Davis, Heather Gribling, Wendy Jackson, Matilda Kamienska, Jennifer Lowder, Shannon Salazar and Jeb Stuart. Two English and three Western riders will advance from the zone competition to the national competition in April.
