Cowboy Symposium to Draw World-Class Entertainers

LAS CRUCES--Performances from some of the nation's finest cowboy poets, musicians, storytellers and artists will provide world-class entertainment during the Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium Oct. 7-10, at the Ruidoso Downs Race Track.

"The Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium has become one of the world's largest and most respected gatherings of professional cowboy entertainers, artists and historians," said Mike Cook, director of the Rural Economic Development Through Tourism(REDTT) project.

The event starts Thursday night with a country music concert featuring Mark Chestnut. There will be country swing dances on the following two nights.

Participants can take an authentic trail ride, watch a professional horseshoer in action or hear a world-class trainer offer tips on horsemanship.

"They also have the world's richest chuck wagon cook-off, and they offer more than $10,000 in prizes," he said.

There will be a special tribute to country music legend Bob Wills during the event.

The cost of the symposium is $10 per person for nonsymposium members and $5 for members.

REDDT, a program of New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Program, promotes agriculture through tourism.
