Grants Senior Center Garden Tour Planned

LAS CRUCES -- Row covers and plastic mulches will be the focus of a garden tour, sponsored by New Mexico State University, at the Senior Center in Grants Aug. 18.

Participants will see how row covers and plastic mulches protect plants from frost and help control weeds. Researchers will display tomatoes, squash and peppers produced with and without these treatments.

"The woven black plastic mulch we used in a recent demonstration project not only eliminates weeds, but also warms the soil and helps conserve moisture," said George Dickerson, horticulturist with NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service. "The row covers helped protect the plants from cold weather, hail and even prairie dogs in the spring, resulting in earlier growth and crop production.

Insect and disease control also will be discussed.

The two-hour program begins at 9 a.m. For more information or directions to the garden, contact Cal Baca, Cibola County Extension agent, at (505) 287-9266.
