The New Mexico Cattle Growers' Short Course to Focus on Marketing

LAS CRUCES--Marketing will be the focus of the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Short Course April 8-9 at the Stevens Motel in Carlsbad.

"The Cattle Growers' Short Course give ranchers an update on research and issues that affect the livestock industry," said Ron Parker, animal resources department head with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.

On April 8, topics will include challenges producers face marketing beef, proposed changes in live cattle grading systems, using feeder and stocker marketing options and a preliminary report on a New Mexico cattle health study.

"An important issue facing the livestock industry at this time is the concern about antibiotic resistance in livestock as well as in human populations," Parker said.

Kynan Sturgess, a veterinarian with Bayer Animal Health in Canyon, Texas, will address these issues on April 9. Other research topics will include the uniform beef genetics program, beef cow efficiency in the Southwest and the effects of previous grazing regimes on feedlot cattle.

Ranchers also will get an update on a standardized performance analysis, brush control on the Pecos River and the beef quality assurance program in New Mexico.

The short course will be followed by the spring meeting of the New Mexico Cattle Growers' Association.

Registration for the short course will be $20, payable at the door or through the Cattle Growers' Association.
