Toys for Tots Bike Rally Winds Through Sierra County

LAS CRUCES - For a small fee and an unwrapped toy, you can join the second annual Toys for Tots Bike Rally through Elephant Butte, Truth or Consequences and Hillsboro, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 28-29.

Registration is at I p.m. each day, with the races starting at 3 p.m. Each day's race begins at the Quality Inn in Elephant Butte and continues through nearby state parks to the New Mexico Veterans Center in Truth or Consequences. On Saturday, the route returns from the Veterans Center to Hillsboro, where a special meal will be prepared at the S Bar X Saloon. In addition to individual bikers, couple or tandem riders, cyclists, moped riders and people in automobiles are welcome. The fee is $20 per person or $35 per couple for either day's race or for both. Participants are asked to bring an unwrapped toy to each day's event.

The admission fee includes the rally, a commemorative t-shirt, a barbeque dinner at 4 p.m. on Saturday and free camping at Elephant Butte Lake State Park. Anyone wishing to enter the rally is encouraged to pre-register two weeks before the event.

"The bike route through Sierra County is truly beautiful, and the rally will be a lot of fun. It also benefits a worthy-cause helping to provide holiday toys to needy children," said Mike Cook, coordinator of the Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) project, a program of New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Program, which promotes agriculture through tourism.
