Celebrate 4-H Week in October

LAS CRUCES -- 4-H clubs across New Mexico will get to strut their stuff during 4-H Week from Oct. 1 - 7.

"4-H week is a celebration of the accomplishments of the past year and an opportunity to tell everyone about this great organization," said Cheryl Butterfield, 4-H youth development specialist with New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.

4-H Week activities vary from county to county. Past activities have included barbecues, dances, window decorating contests and a display of the previous year's projects.

Many clubs have enrollment drives during the week, Butterfield said. The organization offers young people many learning activities that develop their self-confidence, leadership abilities and self-esteem.

"4-H is offered to all kids, whether they live in rural or urban areas", Butterfield said. "There's a great variety of activities, including public speaking, shooting sports, rocketry, leathercraft -- over one hundred projects available. It's so much more than cows and cooking."
