Alcalde Field Day and Soap-making Workshop Scheduled

ALCALDE -- New Mexicans can learn about soap making, cattle grazing and a host of other issues at the Sustainable Agricultural Science Center at Alcalde's field day and soap-making workshop, scheduled for Aug. 18-19.

The field day on Aug. 18, co-sponsored by New Mexico State University's Agricultural Experiment Station and the Cooperative Extension Service, will feature demonstrations about cut flower production, cool-season grass varieties, gardening in cooler weather, elk deterrent methods and intensive cattle grazing management using electric fences. Asparagus, apple and chile varieties also will be discussed, in addition to cattle pregnancy testing and artificial insemination.

Registration for the free field day begins at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 18 at the science center near Espanola, and the public is invited to attend. A barbecue dinner is scheduled at 4 p.m.

The herbal soap-making workshop will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Onate Center on the Taos highway, north of Alcalde. Participants will learn how to make safe, natural, herbal cosmetics for home, gifts and profit using locally-grown or common herbs.

The free workshop is sponsored by NMSU and the Rural Agricultural Improvement and Public Affairs Project. A $5 donation is requested to help pay the cost of soap-making materials. Pre-registration is encouraged since space is limited. For more information, contact Charles Martin at (505) 852-4241.
