Solar Electricity Seminar Mar. 14 in Alamogordo

LAS CRUCES -- Homeowners can learn about harnessing the sun's power to create solar electricity during a two-hour seminar Mar. 14 in Alamogordo.

The seminar, sponsored by New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service and the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, will introduce participants to photovoltaic (PV) technology and its uses in the home.

"PV technology uses solar cells that convert light energy directly into electricity -- without moving parts, without consuming any fuel other than light, and without producing chemical by-products or noise pollution," said JoAnn Emmel, Extension energy specialist. This electricity can be used to power households.

Seminar topics will include PV uses in the home, selecting and buying PV equipment, and guidelines for installing and maintaining PV supplies. The workshop will feature Lu Yoder and Joe Yarkin of Solo Power Solar Electric Systems.

The session runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Otero County Fairgrounds in Alamogordo. Registration is $5 per person before Mar. 7, and $6 thereafter. For more information, contact Lee Loney at (505) 437-0231.
