Alumnus to sign book during Homecoming

New Mexico State University alumnus Walter Gerald Hines will sign copies of his new book "Aggies of the Pacific War: NM A&M and the War With Japan" at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, at the NMSU Bookstore, located in Corbett Center Student Union.

Hines, of Albuquerque, graduated from NMSU in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and in 1967 with a master's degree in the same field. His father, the late Jerry Hines, was the Aggie athletic director, and football and basketball coach from 1929 to 1940. "Aggies of the Pacific War," published by Yucca Tree Press, tells individual stories of ex-Aggies who fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

"What I wanted to do was take stories and weave them into the whole chronology of the Pacific war," Hines said.

The book is based on information from the multi-volume "War Books" held by the NMSU Alumni Office, which were compiled by former Registrar Era Rentfrow, and interviews with former Aggies and their families involved in the war.

"Aggies of the Pacific War" retails for $25. A portion of all sales will go to the NMSU Alumni Scholarship fund.

Hines is this year's recipient of the NMSU James F. Cole Memorial Award for Service. He will be recognized at an Eye Opener Breakfast at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct.9, at the Corbett Center Ballrooms as part of Homecoming week.
