NMSU Extension to Host Upcoming Pecan Workshops

Controlling insects and managing orchards will be the focus of two pecan workshops conducted by New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service.

"The Insect Control in Pecan Orchards Workshop will be held May 11 at the Leyendecker Plant Science Center," said Esteban Herrera, Extension horticulturist.

Topics to be discussed at the workshop include pecan nut casebearer, weed control in pecan orchards, controlling aphids in pecan orchards and life cycle and control of pecan weevil.

The workshop will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be served. There is no charge for the workshop.

The Western Pecan Orchard Management Short Course will be June 5-9 at the Hilton Las Cruces.

"The short course will cover all aspects of pecan orchard management from variety selection to harvesting, including pruning, nutrition, water management, weed and pest control as well as economics and marketing," Herrera said.

The course will include field trips to a shelling plant and pecan orchards in the Mesilla Valley. There also will be workshops on budding and grafting and the use of computers in pecan orchard management.

Registration for the short course will start at $200. Registration turned in before May 15 will be reduced $10.
