"On the Border" conference in Las Cruces Oct. 14-16

The New Mexico Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (NMTESOL) will hold its Rocky Mountain Regional Conference "On the Border of a New Millennium" at the Las Cruces Hilton from Oct. 14-16.


The conference theme is "Ideologies, Strategies and Change in English as a Second Language/English as a Foreign Language Education." Featured speakers include professor Elsa Auerbach from the University of Massachusetts and professor Sudia Paloma McCaleb from the New College in San Francisco. Also speaking at the conference will be author Gloria Lopez-Stafford. Lopez-Stafford is a social worker with the Gadsden Independent School District and author of the acclaimed novel "A Place in El Paso: The Story of a Mexican-American Childhood."

A pre-convention workshop, "Using Culture to Integrate the Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills into the ESL Class," will be presented by Patricia deHesus Lopez at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. A social with mariachis will be held at 7 p.m.

Workshops will begin at 8 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
