Rockhound Roundup Brings Collectors and Buyers to Deming

LAS CRUCES - Thousands of gem and mineral collectors and dealers will be in Deming, NM for the 36th annual Rockhound Roundup, March 8-11 at the Southwest New Mexico Fairgrounds.

"The roundup is one of the largest events of its type in the Southwest," said Mike Cook, Coordinator of New Mexico State University's Rural Economic Development Through Tourism (REDTT) project. "It includes guided field trips, displays, live demonstrations, lapidary equipment, auctions and an array of jewelry, gems and minerals."

There is no charge to attend the roundup, which is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"One of the great features of the Rockhound Roundup is the field trips, which leave the fairgrounds at 8:30 a.m. on March 8, 9 and 10. Participants can expect to find everything from agate to onyx," said Cook.

REDTT is a program of NMSU's Cooperative Extension Service, which promotes agriculture through tourism.
