Farmers Can Learn Efficient Irrigation Practices at Oct. 23 Workshop

LAS CRUCES - Farmers and small-tract water users in the Elephant Butte Irrigation District (EBID) can learn more about how their water is delivered and how to make the most of it at an Oct. 23 workshop in Las Cruces.

The Agricultural Water Management Practices workshop, hosted by New Mexico State University's Cooperative Extension Service, will begin at 10 a.m. in the EBID conference room at 530 S. Melendres St.

"Our main audience is the water users themselves, whether they are considered farm-rate users of more than three acre feet of water or small-tract irrigators who use less than three acre feet of water," said Leeann DeMouche, a specialist with NMSU's Extension Plant Sciences department.

DeMouche and James Narvaez, EBID district hydrologist, will open with an explanation of the irrigation district's distribution system, which serves more than 8,000 users from Sierra County, N.M., to El Paso, Texas.

"If irrigators know exactly what it takes for EBID to get water onto their land, then
hopefully that process can be faster, more efficient and more productive for them all around," DeMouche said.

Presenters will offer ideas on effective irrigation scheduling and management. Irrigation practices discussed at the workshop will be compiled as part of a guidebook for water users, she said.

The workshop ties in with research by NMSU's Water Task Force, a group of about 75 scientists with water-related expertise.

"This workshop comes out of the Rio Grande Basin Initiative, which is connected to agricultural economist Frank Ward's research on institutional barriers to water conservation in agriculture," DeMouche said.

The workshop will also include information about coping with drought.
