NMSU Educator Wins Teaching Award

LAS CRUCES- Carlos Rosencrans Jr., associate professor of agricultural and extension education at New Mexico State University, received the 2002 Western region John Deere Award from the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture. The award recognizes exceptional work educating students in the fields of agricultural business, technology and management.

The award, presented June 22, at the association's 48th annual conference in Lincoln, Neb., is given jointly to a faculty member and his or her institution. NACTA is a professional society that promotes excellence in teaching agriculture and related subjects at the college level.

At NMSU, Rosencrans has earned student approval ratings of 96 percent or higher. In a recommendation letter, one student said that "he would literally take the shirt off his back if he thought it would help a student." Another wrote about his genuine desire to see his students prosper.

"I learn as much from my students every day as they learn from me," Rosencrans has said.

His respect for students has inspired more than half of his advisees to become teachers. His accessibility as an adviser was cited by many students as a positive influence at NMSU.

Rosencrans received the 2001 NACTA Teaching Award of Merit. He is the national secretary/treasurer for Alpha Tau Alpha, the honorary society for agricultural education. His work has been published in the Journal of Agricultural Education and Agricultural Education Magazine, among others. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural education from NMSU and his doctorate in agricultural education from Iowa State University.
