NMSU graphic design team receives international recognition

While most New Mexico State University students were packing for spring break, a team of students, faculty and staff were unknowingly working towards international recognition.

A poster print designed by a spring 1999 visiting artist and produced by the NMSU team was recognized by a special jury of Mexican and American graphic designers. The special jury award was presented at the 10th annual Quorum Awards, held in Mexico City during the last week of November.

The poster print was designed by visiting artist Rene Galindo. Titled "Stars and Bars," the poster depicts an immigrant worker and makes a statement about immigrant labor in the United States.

The project gave students an opportunity to work for several days with Galindo, a visiting designer from Mexico City. Galindo also gave a public lecture while visiting NMSU and judged student work submitted for a Dia de los Muertos T-shirt design, sponsored by Heritage Days 1999.

The NMSU team included faculty members William Green and Louis Ocepek, staff member Ronnie Garver and students Chad Ballard, Travis McNiel and Billy Pelzel.

"Stars and Bars" is published by the New Mexico Center for the Graphic Arts. The sale of the print benefits the art department's Visiting Artist and Graphic Design programs. Prints by other guest artists and designers are available for sale.
