Pool of candidates for NMSU presidency grows

The pool of applicants for the presidency of New Mexico State University has come together quickly, consultant Bill Funk told the Presidential Search Committee Monday (Dec. 13).

With 40 active applications, Funk said the pool is 85-90 percent complete. However, "some of the best candidates often wait until the end" to maintain confidentiality, he added.

Funk also summarized his activities to date for the 12-member search committee, meeting for the second time. Advertising has been placed in various publications including the Chronicle of Higher Education, Black Issues, Indian Country Today and Hispanic Outlook. Letters and e-mail messages have been sent to potential candidates and other contacts on a list that Funk has developed over years of working as an executive recruiter for higher education.

The committee also approved a Position Description and Criteria Statement to be submitted to the Board of Regents Saturday (Dec. 18) for approval.

After the open session, the committee voted to go into executive session to begin reviewing specific applications. After coming out of the closed session, the committee voted to adjourn. The next meeting of the committee is expected to be in mid to late January, pending confirmation of committee members' schedules, according to Bob Howell, NMSU personnel director and staff member assisting the committee.
