Career Development Events Bring 1,400 FFA Members to NMSU

LAS CRUCES - About 1,400 FFA members from across the state will participate in 21 career development events March 30-April 2 at New Mexico State University.

"Employment skills such as critical thinking, communication skills and performing in a competitive society are the foundation of the career development activities," said Les Purcella, state supervisor of agricultural education and FFA.

The career development contests include dairy foods, pasture and range, wool and landscape design. FFA members participate in timed judging events and written exams.

During contests members willl classify plants,identify dairy products by taste and smell, determine marketability of fleeces and drawscaled landscape construction plans to fit a scenario. Some contests require participants to explain their placings.

New Mexico has 6,000 agricultural education students, more than 4,500 of whom belong to FFA. FFA members participate in community service projects, competitions and leadership events that prepare them for more than 300 careers related to agriculture.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. March 30. Awards will conclude the week's events at 9 a.m. April 2 in the Corbett Center ballrooms on campus.
