NMSU graduate student receives grant to study in India

New Mexico State University sociology graduate student Laura Toussaint has been awarded a National Security Education Program (NSEP) Graduate International Fellowship of $20,000 to conduct research in India.

Toussaint will research literacy levels and health indicators in the states of Kerala and Bihar and how they relate to laborers in Bihar who have little access to health and educational services. She will work cooperatively from September 2000 through June 2001 with the Sociological Research Unit of the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta.

NSEP was created by Congress in 1991. The graduate fellowship provides the opportunity for students in U.S. graduate degree programs to enhance their understanding of geographic areas and countries whose languages and cultures are critical to national security but are less frequently studied.
