NMSU Judging Teams Sweep National Western in Denver

LAS CRUCES -- New Mexico State University swept the livestock and wool judging competitions Jan. 15 at the National Western Judging Contest in Denver, Colo.

The livestock team finished first in sheep, second in reasons, fifth in swine, fifth in beef and sixth in total placings to earn 4,606 points, edging Texas A&M University by two points.

NMSU's Logan MacLennan of Byers, Colo., earned the top individual score, finishing first in reasons and swine, and third in sheep. Teammate Johnathan Walsh of Torreon was third in individual scoring.

"I am proud of what the team has accomplished. They have achieved success with a lot of hard work and talent," said coach Clay Elliott.

NMSU's livestock team was runner-up at the recent Arizona National Senior College Livestock Judging Contest in Phoenix. Leading the team was Jenae Antonick of Sahuarita, Ariz., who placed second overall and second in beef and sheep. Mike Horvath of Hesperus, Colo., was fourth and Walsh was fifth in individual scoring.

Elliott and graduate student Darick Chabot coach the livestock team. Other members are Andrea Yelek of Santa Fe; Jared Long, Great Falls, Mont.; Morgan McConaughey, Riverton, Wyo.; and Nikki Gifford, Greybull, Wyo.

NMSU's wool judging team won its first contest of the season in Denver with a total score of 1,849 points, two points ahead of Texas A&M.

"The team's performance was excellent," said NMSU coach Tim Ross. "They rose to the level of expectation."

Davena Norris of Cliff posted the top individual score with a first in line grading, second in hand spinning and fourth in the judging section. Chris Spear of Roswell was second in individual scoring.

Ross and students Richard Dunlap and Clint Hopper coach the team. Other members are Tessie Emond of Bosque Farms; Rachel Lueras of Corona; Natali Gonzalez and Erin Mace of El Paso, Texas; Cherrell Owens and Rachel Owens of Shiprock; and Ashley Riley of Waterflow.
