Exhibition showcases Art Gallery's permanent collection

The University Art Gallery at New Mexico State University is presenting "25 Years: A Celebration of the University Art Gallery's Permanent Collection," an exhibition featuring 101 contemporary and historical art works by 82 nationally and internationally recognized artists, through Nov. 4.

The exhibition includes historical and contemporary photographs, paintings, lithography, etchings, ceramics, metals, woodcuts and other contemporary print media.

"The selection of prints for '25 Years' illuminates a broad range of modernist styles," says Charles Lovell, director/curator of the gallery. The gallery's permanent collection holds more than 2,500 works of art, he said.

Included in the exhibition are woodcuts by John Buck, Gregory Amenoff, Eric Avery and Chema Cobo; lithography, etching and print media by Jasper Johns, Dotty Attie, Roy Lichtenstein, Liliana Porter, Luis Jimenez, Jim Dine and Sol LeWitt; paintings by Garo Antreasian, Mario Reis, Joshua Rose, Roy Dowell and Kathleen Elsen; drawings by Walter Anderson, Raul Dorn, Monica Martinez, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Richard Shaw, John Montgomery and Joseph Elmer Yoakum; sculptures by Sol LeWitt and Felipe Archuleta; ceramics by Ron Nagle and metals by Sharon Portelance.

"25 Years" also features works from the New Mexico State University Photography Collection with historical selections by Edward Muybridge, Edward Curtis, Harry Callahan, Laura Gilpin, Martin Chambi, Daniel Lyon and Edward Steichen. Documentary photographers included are Shelby Lee Adams, Bill Burke, Larry Sultan and Bill Ravanesi. Experimental photography is represented by the works of Judy Dater, Jim Goldberg, Judith Golden, Nguyen- Duy Pipo and Carrie Mae Weems.

A public reception will be held at the Art Gallery from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 15.

Summer hours at the Art Gallery through Aug. 22 are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays. Beginning Aug. 23, the gallery will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays, Thursdays until 7 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m.

The University Art Gallery is located in Williams Hall on University Avenue east of Solano.
