Latest edition of Din Magazine to launch May 5

The staff of Din Magazine will host a launch party at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 5 in the Reader's Theater on the New Mexico State University campus to celebrate the release of the second edition of the student-produced magazine.

As part of NMSU's Department of English course in online publishing, students created, designed and edited an online literary magazine that features visual art, short videos, photographs, poetry, short stories and songs. The class is taught each spring with a new class deciding what content to feature in the magazine.

"It is up to the students to come up with a philosophy on what the magazine should be and how they want to reinvent and design it," English professor Connie Voisine said.

Team-taught by Voisine and English professor Jennifer Almjeld, the class engages undergraduate students in the study of the history of literary magazines, as well as how digital technology works. They also study identities created by these works. With assistance from graduate students, Din Magazine staff search for literature and art to feature in the magazine.

"The skills learned in this class can help the students in their future careers," Voisine said. "Not only do they design and edit, they learn a lot about how people make decisions on what is and is not published, which gives them insight on how to increase their chances of getting their own work published."

Din Magazine's launch is open to the campus and community. For more information on the magazine and the event contact Voisine at 575-646-2027.
