New Barnes & Noble at NMSU bookstore set for Aug. 1 opening

After a busy weekend of stocking and tidying up, the new Barnes & Noble at New Mexico State University bookstore, located at the corner of Jordan Street and University Avenue, will open to the public at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 1.

Workers put the finishing touches on the new Barnes & Noble at NMSU bookstore, which opens Aug. 1. The de Havilland DH 82 Tiger Moth Pistol Pete airplane, a 4/5ths-scale model, is among many unique touches to the store, which features decor focusing on NMSU, Las Cruces, New Mexico and the Southwest. Store hours for the new location will be 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The 44,998 square-foot building will house both retail and NMSU office spaces. The Barnes & Noble occupies 30,855 square feet of retail space, including a Barnes & Noble Café serving Starbucks coffee and offering assorted soups, sandwiches and pastries. Office spaces, a workroom and storage areas also are included in that number. Another 2,347 square feet of the first floor has been allocated for future retail space, with a variety of merchants being considered.

In October, NMSU Parking will relocate to a 2,301 square-foot space on the first floor of the building's southwest corner. NMSU Auxiliary Administration will relocate to a 2,808 square-foot space on the second floor of the building's west side. All remaining square footage is comprised of electrical space, mechanical rooms, loading area, public restrooms, elevators and the like.

Through an agreement with Barnes & Noble, NMSU's Parking Lot 15 will serve as the main parking area for store customers. Seventy-eight free parking spots - including four reserved for disabled customers - will be available for customers to park for up to two hours. The spaces will ease the burden on students shopping for textbooks or those wishing to quickly stop in for a coffee or to purchase Aggie merchandise.

As a courtesy to customers a parking enforcement officer will be available from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday to ensure the lot is used efficiently and effectively. After 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and any time during weekends, all lots on campus are open to students, faculty, staff and visitors.

Among the building's inviting features is the first-floor café, with indoor and outdoor seating. Additional features include an expanded children's section, a wider selection of Aggie merchandise and trade books, two "living room" areas featuring gas fireplaces for casual reading or public presentations, an outdoor dining area featuring a third fireplace and a vast array of images and fixtures showcasing the rich history of NMSU, Las Cruces and the Desert Southwest.

The "living room" areas will be available to campus and community organizations to host presentations or meetings. To schedule time for access, patrons should contact NMSU Conference Services at 575-646-4805 or confserv@nmsu.edu.

A grand opening celebration is tentatively scheduled for Sept. 16, after students return to campus. The store's former location inside Corbett Center Student Union permanently closed July 26, and store staff began transferring merchandise between locations.
