Barnes & Noble at NMSU grand opening celebration takes place Sept. 16-18

The new Barnes & Noble at New Mexico State University bookstore has been open more than six weeks; now that the fall textbook rush is over, the official grand opening celebration will take place Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16-18.

In addition to a weekend-long sale on Aggie apparel and good deals on first-generation iPads, the store, located on the corner of Jordan Street and University Avenue, has a variety of special events planned for the weekend, which coincides with the I-10 Rivalry football game between NMSU and the University of Texas - El Paso. Events include live vocal performances, author signings, discounts and even appearance of a costumed character from the children's book "Give a Mouse a Cookie." The character will appear at the bookstore from 10-11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10-11:30 a.m. and again from 2-4 p.m.

A formal open house will be held from 3-5 p.m. Friday that will conclude with a ribbon-cutting celebration and remarks by NMSU President Barbara Couture and a variety of other speakers, including Janine von Juergensonn, vice president for marketing with Barnes & Noble College Booksellers and Associated Students of NMSU President Austin Graham.

Following the ribbon cutting, at 5:15 p.m., the official pep rally for Saturday's NMSU-UTEP game will take place on the Rhodes-Garrett-Hamiel lawn, across from the bookstore on Jordan Street. Aggie head coach DeWayne Walker will join NMSU cheerleaders and the NMSU Pride Band at the rally, which also will feature a dunking booth and UTEP Miner pińatas.

A variety of authors will make appearances all three days, reading from and signing their works. Authors scheduled to appear include Lawrence Welsh ("Begging for Vultures"); NMSU Distinguished Alumni award winner Denise Chavez ("Loving Pedro Infante"); Sasha Pimentel Chacon ("Insides She Swallowed"); NMSU history professor Jon Hunner ("J. Robert Oppenheimer, the Cold War, and the Atomic Age"); Richard Yanez ("Cross Over Water"); Jessica Helen Lopez ("Always Messing With Them Boys"); Gary Cozzens ("The Nogal Mesa: A History of Kivas and Ranchers in Lincoln County"); Walter Earl Pittman ("New Mexico and the Civil War"); Margaret Randall ("Ruins"); and children's author Ana Baca ("Tia's Tamales").

In addition, Tres Chicas -Miriam Sagan, Renee Gregorio and City of Santa Fe Poet Laureate Joan Logghe, - authors of "Love & Death: Greatest Hits," will appear Saturday to read from their works and then host a writer's workshop Sunday.

Throughout the weekend, customers also may register to win a dorm refrigerator, courtesy of Honest Tea. NMSU students will have the opportunity to enter a drawing to win a $500 textbook scholarship for spring 2012 semester books as well.
