ASTC at NMSU Theatre Arts presents classic 'Miss Julie'

American Southwest Theatre Company at NMSU Theatre Arts will present August Strindberg's classic, "Miss Julie," Sept. 23 through Oct. 9 at the Hershel Zohn Theatre at NMSU.

Set in 1874, the play focuses on Miss Julie, mistress of a country manor, as she struggles against the restlessness of her social station, burgeoning passions for her coachman, Jean, and a life free from her domineering father.

"This is a phenomenally compelling play," said Tom Smith, managing director. "There is romance, passion and tragedy throughout. It is a classic in theater, and we are so proud to open our season with this incredible production."

In addition to directing the play, Smith also adapted it.

"It runs a very tight 90 minutes, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time," Smith said.

The production features scenic and lighting design by Jim Billings, costume design by Deborah L. Brunson, sound design by Tom Smith and properties by David Hereford. The cast includes NMSU students Erin McClure as Miss Julie, William Zimmerman as Jean and Jessica Thierry as Kristine.

"I can honestly say that this is one of the best casts I've ever worked with," Smith said. "Audiences will be in for a real treat."

The opening night of the production will include a special reception hosted by Christa Slaton, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at NMSU. It will include appetizers and beverages during intermission and cake and punch following the show.

All evening performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at the Hershel Zohn Theatre Box Office between noon and 4 p.m. or by calling 575-646-4515.
